Text Box: The coach is at the center of AYSO’s mission: to give every child a positive team experience through the world’s most popular sport, soccer. The AYSO coach does far more than teach children how to kick a ball. You’re a role model with the opportunity to be an important part of a child’s development. As coach, you’ll have the reward of seeing players grow through participation, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. You may also win a few soccer games, but we guarantee you and your players will have a great time.

No experience necessary! All that’s required is a love of children, a willingness to learn, and a sense of humor. You give us the time, we’ll give you the rest: training, encouragement, soccer balls, cones, and fun.

The time commitment is one practice a week for an hour on a weekday afternoon (to be arranged at mutual convenience) and about 90 minutes on Saturdays to coach the games and control your parents. Assistant coaches can fill in on occasion. The season begins in early September and runs to early December.

All first-time coaches must attend an all-day coaching clinic on Sunday, August 10, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Old Gymnasium, Pacific Palisades Recreation Center. Assistant Coaches are encouraged to come, as well. It’s a fun day in which we’ll teach you the game, show you how to teach the game plus how to organize a practice and run a team. If you can’t make it on Aug. 10, there will be a make-up session on September 7, but we encourage you to make the earlier date if at all possible to help you get organized early and meet your fellow coaches prior to the season. If neither of these dates work, we can arrange for you to attend a clinic in another region.

Designate “Coach” as your number one request on the volunteer form, and we’ll be in touch. If you have any questions, feel free to call or e-mail me at the numbers below. Thanks for being part of AYSO. We look forward to having you in our program.
